The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a UK government grant that supports homeowners in upgrading from fossil fuel heating (oil, gas, electric) to low-carbon heat pumps. Fully installer-led, it offers up to £7,500 towards your installation.
Who is eligible for the BUS grant?

You can apply if you:

  • Own a property in England or Wales
  • Are replacing an existing fossil fuel system (oil, gas, electric)
  • Have a valid EPC certificate
  • Are not replacing an existing heat pump or biomass system
How much funding can I get?

You can get:

  • Air Source Heat Pump: £7,500
  • Ground Source Heat Pump: £7,500
  • Biomass Boiler: £5,000 (rural, off-gas only)

Can I use BUS on a self-build property?

Yes! Self-builds are eligible if:

  • You or the original owner built it, or paid a builder to build it
  • It’s never been owned by a business or organization
  • It’s not part of an excluded development

You’ll need proof of self-build, such as title deeds, for your installer.

What if my property isn’t well insulated?

Heat pumps are most efficient in well-insulated properties, but you can still apply them. If you don’t have any insulation, we can assist you in obtaining free insulation through GBIS or ECO4.

Loft or cavity wall insulation can decrease heat loss, lower energy bills, and make your home more comfortable – sometimes by as much as 25% less energy waste.

How does the BUS application process work?

It is simple:

  • Contact an MCS-certified installer
  • The installer submits the grant application on your behalf
  • You give your agreement to the application
  • The installer finishes the installation, reclaiming the grant from Ofgem

The grant is subtracted from your quote upfront – no handling of money required.

Why should I apply now for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The BUS grant is capped each year, and BUS grants are in place until 31st December 2027. Waiting could result in foregoing up to £7,500 and a cleaner, cheaper heating solution.

Can I claim BUS together with other grants?

Yes. You can still claim BUS if you have received grants for:

  • Insulation upgrades
  • Energy efficiency measures

However, you cannot claim the BUS together with other government grants for heat pumps and biomass boilers.

How long do I have to install after approval?

You have around 120 days after approval of the application for the Air Source Heat Pump Grant.  Failure to meet these deadlines means you will have to make a new application.

How do I ensure my installer is qualified?

All BUS installations must be carried out by MCS-approved installers. You can check it on the government’s official website. ECO Energy Services are registered installer. We ensure:

  • Our installers are technically competent
  • They meet the requirements of BUS and building regulations
  • Consumer protection and quality installation
