Heat Pump Applications Up By Almost 50% As Families Make The most Of Government Grant Increase

London – Applications for heat pumps in the UK have surged nearly 50% year-on-year, according to government figures. This jump follows a significant increase in grants for these eco-friendly heating systems.

The December 2023 data shows a dramatic rise in applications through the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme. This scheme helps homeowners switch from fossil fuel heating to cleaner alternatives like heat pumps, with financial assistance to offset upfront costs.

A key factor in the surge is likely the 50% increase in heat pump grants announced last October. These grants now cover up to £7,500, making the UK’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme one of the most generous in Europe.

“We recently made our Boiler Upgrade Scheme one of the most generous schemes in Europe,” said Energy Security Secretary Claire Coutinho. “Applications are now up by nearly 50% compared to last year.”

“Helping people, rather than forcing them, to make the right choices for their homes will always be my priority,” she added.

Lord Callanan, Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance, echoed this sentiment, stating, “These figures show more people want the cleaner heating and more stable bills you get with a heat pump.”

“Our approach to reaching net zero works, and because of increased heat pump grants, there’s never been a better time to make the switch,” Callanan concluded.

The data also reveals regional variations in heat pump installations, with the South West leading the pack at 3,655 installations, followed by the South East (excluding London) at 3,605 and the East at 2,452.
